Virginia Gay’s adaptation of Cyrano, now on stage at the CAA Theatre, presents a contemporary ‘queered’ reimagining of the classic narrative Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. Both the adaptation and original source are marked by moments of wit and deftly constructed misunderstandings. Gay maintains some originality from the original source. For example, she references the central character’s enduring insecurities, most evident in the dilemma regarding the individual’s nose. What’s new in this opening night production, but not necessarily unique, is the introduction of gender-bending the central character, casting her as a woman instead of a man.

Performances are commendable. Clare Watson’s direction is thoughtful in staging.

Overall, Gay’s Cyrano does not fundamentally expand on learning anything new about human nature in same-sex relationships. The exploration into same sex human nature becomes superficial. We already know people want to be accepted and loved for who they are, no matter their sexual or gender orientation.

The production commences with performers 1 (Mona Goodwin), 2 (David Tarkenter), and 3 (Mackenzie Gilbert) breaking the fourth wall. They discuss with vigorous and spirited conversation the processes of theatre-making and staging Cyrano. The dialogue is full of wonderful wordplay and serves as a device to invite the audience to reflect on how they view vulnerability in their own relationships with others and on what they see on stage. The plot follows a beautiful, pretty Roxanne (Madeline Charlemagne), captivated by the brawn, muscle, and virility of Yan (George Ioannides), a soldier whose eloquence falters in romantic contexts. Cyrano (Eryn Jean Norvill), articulate yet self-doubting due to her nose, aids Yan by crafting poetic expressions of affection. This collaboration leads to complications rooted in misinterpretations regarding Roxanne’s orientation and Yan’s intentions.

The production’s design elements are especially well-realized. Sound designer Toby Young ensures a balanced auditory experience, combining clear dialogue with evocative and adult-natured preshow music to establish atmosphere. Amanda Stoodley’s set leverages the openness of the CAA Theatre, creating a backstage environment that offers a unique vantage point for audiences. Andy Purves’s lighting design further enriches the production through a sophisticated interplay of light and shadow, enhancing emotional depth.

Clare Watson’s direction brings both dynamism and clarity to the staging, underscoring Virginia Gay’s intentions and facilitating visually compelling scenes guided by incisive comedic sensibility. Stage movement remains purposeful throughout, fostering fluidity and cohesion.

Among the cast, George Ioannides delivers a notably confident portrayal of Yan, distinguished by a strong physical presence. The use of gender-blind casting introduces additional interpretive layers, particularly during instances when Roxanne is unaware of the true origins of Yan’s poetic declarations. Eryn Jean Norvill’s performance as Cyrano stands out for its series of resonant monologues, which display considerable linguistic command. While the eventual rapport between Norvill’s Cyrano and Charlemagne’s Roxanne is genuinely affecting, it reiterates rather than deepens familiar insights about love.

According to Virginia Gay, Cyrano is conceived as a comedy that relies upon active engagement between performers and audience. In this regard, the production is successful, drawing strength from its immediacy, energy, and the palpable commitment of its cast.

Recommendation: This production is recommended for those appreciative of refined theatrical performance. Although it may not introduce novel perspectives on same sex relationships, it exemplifies high-calibre theatre stagecraft.
