About Us

Founder Joe Szekeres established OUR THEATRE VOICE with the goal of exploring how collaborative efforts drive the success of live theatre productions.  Recognizing that audiences typically experience only the final product of performance, Joe wanted to look behind the curtain to see how the backstage also contributed to the performance. In response to the challenges posed by Covid-19 in 2020, he introduced the Profiles Series to engage with artists and provide insight into their experiences during a particularly difficult period for the arts sector.
As live theatre experiences renewed growth, OUR THEATRE VOICE maintains its commitment to inspiring and encouraging future audiences to attend performances. The website and its social media will continue to deliver thoughtful analysis and a look at what goes on the stage with periodic features of what’s happening behind the curtain. This analysis and look behind the scenes will always be handled with integrity, care, compassion, diligence and professionalism.
Audience members are always encouraged to share their perspectives on the theatre, contributing to ongoing dialogue fostered on respect for others, dignity, care, compassion, and understanding.

Based outside of Toronto and covering festivals and theatres from Toronto to Stratford, Shaw, Gananoque, Winnipeg and beyond, ‘Our Theatre Voice’ becomes a go-to source for theatre reviews, archival insights, feature behind the curtain information and up to the minute news on the Canadian stage.

As a youngster, I went to see a production of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ at the old Colonnade Theatre on Bloor St. There were about five people in the audience – probably some special Tuesday matinee. I sat on a bench in the first row, my knobby knees sticking out into the playing area. Martha was literally on one side of my nose and George was on the other side. They were screaming back and forth over my head like I was the tennis net.

Boom – fifty years of loving theatre ensued.
