Here’s the link to my earlier review of The Surrogate in March at Crow’s Theatre: https://ourtheatrevoice.com/bold-and-unsettling-silence-speaks-volumes-in-the-world-premiere-of-the-surrogate/

You can find the synopsis in the link. This cast and creative team now perform Mohsin Zaidi’s first play in the Rose McQueen Theatre at Stratford’s Here for Now Theatre.

This time around, I’m giving The Surrogate a VOICE CHOICE, must-see production. It’s even tighter in pacing with captivating and enthralling performances.

A few more standouts at the performance I attended:

  1. Chris Malkowski’s lighting design (with assistance from associate designer Emilie Trimbee) heightens the intensity even further to the point where I felt myself holding my breath more than I did last month.
  1. The final silent moment between Fuad Ahmeer’s Sameer and Thom Nyluus’s Jake in the play is etched in my mind for its starkness and candour. That moment conveys so much as it’s haunting.
  1. Sarena Parmar’s Marya breaks my heart even more.
  1. We need more people like Antonette Rudder’s Christina, who tell it like it is while also offering compassion and empathy when appropriate.

Please, please, please go and see it.

The Surrogate runs to April 26 in the Rose McQueen Theatre at Stratford’s Here for Now Theatre, 24 St. Andrew Street. For tickets: call (519) 272-4368 or email: info@herefornowtheatre.com . Visit herefornowtheatre.com to learn more about The Surrogate and Here for Now’s 2026 season.
