This Stratford Festival production of Othello earns that attention through a measured build toward tragedy and a series of performances that keep the drama focused, tense, and closely observed.

Othello (André Sills), a respected general in Venice, defies social and racial expectations by secretly marrying Desdemona (Krystin Pellerin), the daughter of Senator Brabantia (Chick Reid). Soon after the elopement, he is called to Cyprus, accompanied by his lieutenant Michael Cassio (Jordin Hall) and by Iago (Evan Buliung), whose outward loyalty masks a calculated campaign against him.

Roderigo (Rylan Wilkie), who had hoped to marry Desdemona, becomes one of Iago’s instruments after Brabantia rejects his suit. Iago then sets out to undermine Othello’s standing by exploiting his insecurities and manufacturing evidence that Desdemona has been unfaithful with Cassio.

From that point, jealousy, damaged trust, and fractured alliances propel the play toward its final catastrophe.

At the Tom Patterson Theatre, Thomas Ryder Payne’s soundscape establishes an atmosphere of distance and unease, while Siobhán Sleath’s lighting sustains a muted sense of threat. Brian Dudkiewicz’s set, with fractured frames suspended above the stage, reinforces the production’s visual emphasis on instability.

Director Haysam Kadri clearly frames Othello’s world as one defined by concealment, surveillance, and shifting appearances. Kadri keeps the show’s pacing brisk, building suspense as its cornerstone. The use of a trapdoor for entrances by Iago and Roderigo, at moments surrounded by ensemble members, contributes to an image of hidden forces at work beneath the social order.

The acting company provides the production’s strongest argument.

Sills and Pellerin initially present Othello and Desdemona with composure and mutual confidence. Their early scenes emphasize a relationship grounded in affection and public resolve, even within a society prepared to scrutinize it. Pellerin’s Desdemona is especially convincing in the scene in which she urges Othello to consider Cassio with compassion after his loss of military rank. Buliung’s Iago is controlled, calculating, and effective in showing how deception gains force through patience rather than display. Sills charts Othello’s decline with increasing volatility, making the character’s psychological collapse both stark and credible.

Pellerin keeps Desdemona grounded in empathy without sentimentality, which strengthens the impact of the final scenes in which she gets ready for bed, assisted by Jessica B. Hill’s Emilia (wife of Buliung’s Iago). Hill is a gifted actor who conveys realistic shock, anger, and moral clarity, allowing pauses and focused attention to carry the force of the moment’s horrific reality. Jordin Hall’s Cassio is unwavering in wanting to remain loyal and true to Othello.

In his Director’s Note, Haysam Kadri writes that the play is a story about how quickly trust can be broken by doubt and suspicion that slowly take over the protagonist’s mind. Jealousy fueled by broken trust grows without proof, fed by fear and assumption.

Stratford’s Othello clearly earns its VOICE CHOICE designation. This terrific cast demonstrates a clear artistic purpose and leaves a lasting impression of stagecraft and emotional moments that will linger long after the curtain has come down.

Running time: approximately two hours and 45 minutes with one interval/intermission.

The production runs to September 27 at the Avon Theatre at the Stratford Festival, 99 Downie Street. For tickets: stratfordfestival.ca or call 1-800-567-1600.
