Collaboration will see Shaw productions staged at the Fleck Theatre while Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Royal George Theatre is rebuilt.
TORONTO — On a rain-soaked morning overlooking Lake Ontario, representatives from the Shaw Festival and Harbourfront Centre gathered to announce a partnership that will bring world-class theatre to Toronto audiences beginning this fall.
The collaboration will make Harbourfront Centre a temporary Toronto home for select Shaw Festival productions over the next several years as construction continues on the new Royal George Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Municipal, provincial and federal representatives joined officials from both arts organizations at the launch, underscoring the broader public support for a partnership focused on collaboration, storytelling and cultural exchange.
Anthony Shaffer’s Sleuth will be the first Shaw production presented through the partnership. The production will play the Fleck Theatre, with previews scheduled for Oct. 16 and 17, an official opening on Oct. 18 and performances running through Nov. 1.
The season will continue with Shaw’s annual production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, which begins previews Nov. 12 and runs through Nov. 19 before opening Nov. 20. Performances are scheduled to continue until Dec. 23.
Shaw Artistic Director Tim Carroll also indicated that a third production is planned, though its title has not yet been announced. Details are expected in October.
